FARMWORKER OUTREACH TRIP
PARTNER WITH US AS WE BRING THE JOY OF MUSIC AND MOVEMENT FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES AS WELL AS THE WORLD RENOWNED EDUCATION OF KINDERMUSIK TO THE FARMWORKER COMMUNITY SERVED BY Beth-El Farmworker Ministry, Inc IN WIMAUMA, FL.
Earlier this year one of my colleagues and I were talking about the injustices toward and struggle for immigrant families and their children and how we wished there was a way we could help these families and those who truly serve them in our country. Knowing the value of music and movement for the developing child's brain and body and understanding the connection and education Kindermusik can bring to schools and families it became a desire to somehow use Kindermusik as a tool to provide joy, learning, and support. Far be it for Miss Christa (my colleague and friend) to just talk about it. She found a mission that works directly with Migrant farmworkers in Florida and has planned a trip to bring Kindermusik to these families. Miss Beth, Jacob, and Katie-Beth will all be going very early in the New Year to participate in this outreach. We're going to invite our Pathways to Learning Families to partner with us in this endeavor. More details on how you can help coming your way. First, some information to help you understand the need and the people we will be working with. Migrant farmworkers are the poorest of the working poor. They brave the Florida heat to labor in extremely adverse conditions. Ninety percent are from Mexico and Central America. Some remain in one location year round (seasonal farmworkers), while others follow the crops (migrating farmworkers).
Workers generally outnumber the available jobs. Many are only able to find work an average of 30 hours per week for only 30 weeks per year, they struggle to feed themselves and their families. Most farmworkers are plagued by nutrition-related health problems: low birth-weight babies, anemia in children and diabetes and high blood pressure in adults. Housing is so scarce that it often consumes half of a family’s income. In order to survive, farmworkers crowd together in dilapidated trailers and rental units, creating adverse living conditions.
Frequent moves handicap migrant children in public school. They have little chance to develop self-confidence. Even those children whose families remain year-round may miss school to care for younger siblings so that both parents can work. Cultural and language differences make it hard for them to learn, and they often feel they don’t belong. Frustration takes its toll, many students drop out, limiting themselves to lives of field work and poverty.
Beth-El Farmworker Ministry, located in Wimauma, FL, feeds the mind, spirit, and body of the farmworking community and their neighbors in need, through opportunities for hunger relief, education, healthcare, and spiritual growth. We are excited to partner with them to bring Kindermusik into the lives of the children and families. Kindermusik will reach over 60 children that are in the daycare while both parents are out picking strawberries all day in the fields the week of January 1, 2019. We will not only provide a Kindermusik classroom experience for babies through 5 year olds, we will also work to train the educators in the daycare with the tips, tools, and magic of Kindermusik. We also plan to hold two family music events, to show parents the beauty of Kindermusik and how they can utilize it when they are together at home. Our mission will include taking instruments and props for the children, and then leaving them there so that the workers at the daycare can continue the learning once we leave. Our hope is to also provide home materials in Spanish for the families *just like the ones you receive in class) so the parents can join in the learning too. I would also love to bring some of the Sophie books from Conscious Discipline to help the classroom teachers.
I’m excited for this opportunity to share the joy, learning, connection, and play that is Kindermusik with these families and hope that you will want to support us in this outreach project. Between now and January we will be hosting some special events with donatoin admission so you can help support our trip. You can also contribute by gift/donation anytime. Thank you in advance for supporting this outreach project.
